Fluid/spatial and crystallized intelligence in relation to domain-specific working memory: A latent-variable approach

چکیده
Fluid/spatial intelligence, crystallized intelligence and their relationships to verbal and visuospatial working memory (WM) were studied. A total of 120 Finnish Air Force recruits participated in this study. Fluid/spatial intelligence was assessed using four different tasks, while crystallized intelligence was defined with the help of test scores of Finnish upper secondary school National Matriculation Tests in three different academic subjects and one additional Verbal Relations task. Complex WM span tasks were used to measure visuospatial and verbal WM capacities. Structural equation modeling indicated that verbal WM was related to crystallized intelligence when both WM tasks were included in the model, whereas performance on the visuospatial WM task was related to fluid/spatial intelligence, but not to crystallized intelligence. Verbal WM was not related to fluid intelligence when used as a single WM predictor. The results indicate that verbal WM might be related to verbal ability and learning at school, while visuospatial WM is relatively strongly related to nonverbal reasoning and spatial visualization. The current results further suggest that WM capacity is not a unitary system. D 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Article history: Received 12 December 2011 Received in revised form 14 March 2012 Accepted 10 May 2012 Available online 6 June 2012 This study explored the controversy surrounding working memory: whether it is a unitary system providing general purpose resources or a more differentiated system with domainspecific sub-components. A total of 348 participants completed a set of 6workingmemory task...
متن کاملMemory span and general intelligence: A latent-variable approach
There are several studies showing that working memory and intelligence are strongly related. However, working memory tasks require simultaneous processing and storage, so the causes of their relationship with intelligence are currently a matter of discussion. The present study examined the simultaneous relationships among short-term memory (STM), working memory (WM), and general intelligence ( ...

The roles of processing speed (PS) and short-term storage (STM) for explaining the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC) and intelligence are analyzed at the latent variable level. 253 Chinese college students completed thirty-two measures from different content domains tapping the cognitive constructs of interest. The key findings showed that (a) PS accounts for the relationship b...

Working memory and processing speed are related to intelligence. This study measures concurrently working memory, processing speed and processing efficiency along with fluid, crystallized and spatial intelligence. Two hundred sixty five participants took part in the study. The findings show that working memory and processing efficiency predict fluid, but not crystallized and spatial intelligenc...
